The Curbgag functions similarly to a gag bit but applies pressure through the lower jaw via a leather and nylon curb system rather than the poll. The tongue relief design reduces pressure on the center of the tongue, encouraging greater comfort and acceptance while maintaining effective control.

The bit is ridden with two reins: one attached to the main ring and the second attached to the lower ring connected to the curb mechanism. This setup allows the rider to apply pressure progressively and with precision.
