The gag action creates pressure behind the ears while allowing the mouthpiece to lift within the horse's mouth, encouraging a lighter forehand and improved balance. This makes it particularly useful for horses that tend to lean on the rider's hands or travel heavily on the forehand.

The Waterford mouthpiece features multiple flexible links, making it difficult for the horse to take hold of the bit or brace against it. While highly effective, it creates a less fixed contact and is generally considered a stronger mouthpiece best suited to experienced hands.

Note: Sweet Iron naturally develops a light surface rust when exposed to moisture. This is a normal characteristic of the material and helps encourage salivation. Any orange-brown oxidation can be easily removed with a damp cloth.
